On the beautiful evening of Sunday 6th August, Dr David Bartholomew, until recently the minister of Balmaclellan, Kells and Dalry with Carsphairn, gave a memorable talk on the Covenanters of Balmaghie, three of whom are buried in Balmaghie kirkyard. Standing amongst their graves in this beautiful and peaceful place he addressed an audience of 60 plus who were fascinated to hear the tales of Galloway people persecuted for their faith and how they met their violent deaths. After the 1660 Restoration, the Covenanters lost control of the Kirk and became a persecuted minority, leading to several armed rebellions and a period from 1679 to 1688 known as “The Killing Times”. David has held many Conventicles beside the graves and memorials of Covenanters slain in the hills and at places associated with their stories but this was the first time he had concentrated on Balmaghie. He is currently writing a book on the Covenanters of the Glenkens which will be published in time for Christmas 2024!
