Welcome to Balmaghie Kirk, an historic church nestled in the heart of Galloway, Scotland. Our parish is renowned not only for its spiritual heritage but also for its proximity to one of the most significant archaeological discoveries ever made in Britain of the Viking Ageāthe Galloway Hoard.
Unearthed in 2014 on land adjacent to Balmaghie Kirk, the Galloway Hoard is a unique collection of over 100 objects, including gold, silver, glass, and rare textiles, dating back to around AD 900. This discovery has provided invaluable insights into the rich tapestry of cultural interactions during that period, reflecting influences from Ireland, the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, and as far afield as Asia.
The proximity of the hoard to Balmaghie Kirk has sparked intriguing discussions among historians and archaeologists. Some suggest that the sanctity of the church grounds may have been a deliberate choice for the hoard’s concealment, offering divine protection for these treasured items.
Today, the Galloway Hoard is preserved and displayed at the National Museum of Scotland. To delve deeper into this extraordinary find and explore the ongoing research, we invite you to visit the museum’s dedicated pages:
