The FIRST pet service ever to be held in Balmaghie Kirk took place on Sunday 30th June. In dismal weather there was a great turn out of people and their pets. Despite the Organisers fears of escaping cats, birds, snakes etc there was only one non-dog, the Shetland pony Berry and spaniels were the most represented breed!
The charming ceremony was conducted with great patience and humour by the Rev David Bartholomew who got everyone including the dogs going with his memorable IF I WERE A BUTTERFLY. The wonderful Stewartry Windband complete with a piper welcomed the congregation and then joined the celebration before leading the procession down the hill to a tea consisting of delicious animal shaped bakes and doggy treats.
The lovely old church, decorated with toy animals, emanated a glow of happiness as its organ, silent for over five years, sounded out once more – restored and played by Michael Little. It was the happiest occasion in a truly beautiful setting and the Kirk, 3 R’s Horse Sanctuary, Glencaple Dog Rescue and Stewartry and District Cat Protection all benefited from the collection.
